Information on the Liberty Index:

The Liberty Index is written by Professor Clifford F. Thies.  It rates members of Congress on their official roll call votes during each session of the House and Senate. For each Chamber, twenty votes on economic issues and twenty votes on personal liberty are selected to rank members for their support of individual liberties.

Rather than the traditional left-right political spectrum, the two types of votes are plotted on a two-dimensional Graph, to indicate support for both personal and economic liberties. The resulting Plot more accurately shows the political position of each member in both categories.

Each member of Congress has two percentage scores and a consolidated score, which indicates their standing in the totalitarian to libertarian axis (lower left to upper right).

Professor Clifford F. Thies ( cthies@su.edu ) has compiled every Liberty Index for the past 12 years. The summary includes top scores and highlights of important votes. Thies is a Professor of Economics and Finance at Shenandoah University (Virginia) and a past Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

Index ratings reflect the judgment of Professor Thies on each rollcall, not necessarily the official positions of the Republican Liberty Caucus.
